The CRPNM Continuing Competence Program was fully implemented in 2005 and requires that RPNs engage in an annual process of self assessment; develop, implement and evaluate a learning plan; and maintain a professional portfolio to document their participation in the program.
Over a five year period, all registrants on the Practising register of the CRPNM will be subject to an audit of their participation in the Continuing Competence Program.
The purpose of this audit is to ensure that RPNs on the practicing register are participating in, and compliant with, the processes mandated by the Continuing Competence Program. CRPNM registrants meet the continuing competence requirements throughout the registration year and declare their participation in the Continuing Competence Program on the annual registration renewal application.
Randomly selected RPNs are required to complete a questionnaire and to reflect on how their continuing competence activity has impacted their psychiatric nursing practice. RPNs that are new to the register and those who have returned to the Practising register in the past year are automatically excluded. Once a member has completed the requirements of the audit process their name will be removed from the audit selection until the next 5 year audit cycle.
RPNs audited in the first 5 year cycle are asked to answer the audit questions based on their previous year of practice. For the next audit cycle, RPNs may be audited about any year in the immediately preceding five year period. Remember to keep your continuing competence materials for a five-year period because future audits may be based on any year in that period.
RPN auditors, appointed by the Board of Directors, work in pairs to apply the audit criteria established by the Continuing Competence Committee and make recommendations to the CRPNM Practice Consultant. The CRPNM has established policies and processes to ensure RPNs remain anonymous to the auditors and to ensure security of the completed audit forms.

Participation in the audit process is one of the requirements of the Continuing Competence Program and therefore a requirement for registration renewal. It is important that all RPNs who have not completed the required steps in the Continuing Competence Program or those who require assistance in meeting these requirements contact the CRPNM office for assistance.
